WHY UM-HELENA?
The University of Montana – Helena College of Technology Accounting and Business Technology program has a long history of preparing students to enter the business world – as bookkeepers, accountants, or entrepreneurs. The certificate and degree options have been designed with you, the student, in mind. These options provide the hands-on, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary to be successful in the business world.
WHAT CAN I LEARN?
The Accounting track
The Accounting track emphasizes accounting procedures with other business, communication, and computer courses to complement the needs of today's employers. Students successfully completing the Certificate of Completion Bookkeeping program will be able to maintain accounting records in journals, ledgers, and other accounting forms, both manual and computerized. In addition to those skills, students completing the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Accounting Technology program will have a general knowledge of financial statement presentation, non-profit accounting, managerial accounting, payroll procedures, and income tax preparation.
The Business track
The Business track emphasizes general business courses to provide students with a broad background for the business environment. The Small Business Entrepreneurship Certificate of Completion features courses in entrepreneurship, accounting, computer applications, and general education. The Associate of Applied Science – Small Business Management Technology degree further offers management, marketing, ethics, and finance courses. The two options will provide educational opportunities for students to develop the necessary skills to manage their own businesses.
WHERE CAN THIS TAKE ME?
Our accounting and business technology graduates qualify for accounting technician positions with the state of Montana, bookkeeping positions in private enterprise, positions as accounting assistants for non-profit agencies, payroll technicians, and owners of small businesses.
If you want to further your educational opportunities beyond UM-Helena, you may want to enroll in one of our partnership programs with other institutions of higher education. With a two-year AAS accounting and business technology degree from UM-Helena, it is possible for you to complete a bachelor degree without leaving the Helena area.
