ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Computer Technology teaches students the basic knowledge and skills necessary to solve business problems using comnputers. Students experience a variety of course work using small and large computer systems.

Completion of the first year's curriculum leads to a certificate as a Computer Assistant. The two-year curriculum leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree withy options in Network Adminiistration, Programming, or Webmaster.

Students are required to take 42-45 credits from a selected option:

Network Administration, Programming or Webmaster. Additional General Education and elective credits are required.

WHY UM-HELENA?

UM-Helena offers a variety of options within the Computer Technology program, and our Computer Technology instructors continually assess industry trends to ensure our program offerings give our students highly marketable skills. UM-Helena is proud of the community partnerships it has developed with local agencies and businesses which provide a wide array of opportunities in computer-related internships. Some of the local firms offering internships to UM-Helena students include: Anderson ZurMuehlen & Co., Northrop Grumman, State of Montana Departments of Administration, Commerce, Environmental Quality, and Natural Resources, as well as the Student Assistance Foundation and WESCO.

WHAT CAN I LEARN?

The Computer Technology program offers students the opportunity to earn a one-year Certificate of Completion as a Computer Assistant and two-year Associate of Applied Science degree options in Network Administration, Programming, or Webmaster.

Network Administration graduates are marketable in several areas as network managers, computer support personnel, and IT helpdesk support.

The Programming and Webmaster options focus on computer programming and application development, while several courses in both of these areas focus on Java and Oracle software development. The Programming option also features several courses in advanced database design and development using Oracle. The Webmaster emphasis features several courses in web development and dynamic database-driven web sites.

WHERE CAN THIS TAKE ME?

Computer Technology teaches students the basic knowledge and skills necessary to solve business problems using computers. Completing this course of study will enable our students to enter computer-related fields at a highly competitive wage. Additional transferable general education and elective credits have been included in this curriculum to enhance our students’ ability to continue their education at a four-year institution.

HOW CAN I EARN MY DEGREE?

Most Computer Technology students study a common first year curriculum before selecting a program option.  The one-year Certificate of Completion as a Computer Assistant is earned by completing the first-year curriculum in any of the four options. Please refer to our academic catalog on-line at www.umhelena.edu for more information.

Introduction to Computer Technology, Web Pages, Visual Basic, Relational Database Concepts, English Composition, Fundamentals of Algebra, PC Troubleshooting – A+, Introduction to Sociology or Psychology, Ethics, Accounting/Business Electives, English or Communication Electives, and general elective credits

Network Administration

Network Fundamentals, Operating System and Web Administration, Router Technology, Introduction to Business, LAN Operating Systems, Routing and Switching, Introduction to Unix, Network Administration Seminar

Programming

SQL-PL/SQL, Oracle Developer/Case, Introduction to Object Oriented Programming with Java, Developing Web Applications, Systems Analysis, Project Management, Advanced Java or Web Databases, Unix, Oracle Enterprise Applications

Webmaster

Web Page Graphic Design, PHP Web Development,  Introduction to Object Oriented Programming with Java, Developing Web Applications, Systems Analysis, Advanced Java, Unix, Web Databases
