Our Diesel Technology program provides the hands-on experience and training necessary to enter various areas of the diesel repair industry. Small class size and a focus on actual lab time helps students prepare for positions as entry-level technicians. UM-Helena’s focus on “live work,” using customer-owned equipment and trucks, allows students to practice customer service skills and work on real-world mechanical problems in a supportive educational setting. Industry representatives cite UM-Helena’s excellent reputation and live work component as key reasons UM-Helena’s grads are in great demand.
“I chose UM-Helena because of the school’s great reputation. The Diesel Technology program has knowledgeable instructors who care about how well you do, and they work with you to help you find a job.” –Adam Wood, Joplin
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The program provides comprehensive training in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of drive trains, hydraulics, heavy duty breaks, and other systems common to the diesel repair industry. Students can graduate with either a two-year Certificate of Completion or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Diesel Technology. Both options include general education coursework to ensure a solid foundation in fundamental skills like communication, math, and computers. Students choosing the AAS degree option will enhance their marketability by completing more advanced general education coursework.
WHERE CAN THIS TAKE ME?
Diesel Technology graduates have a number of employment options with agriculture and truck dealerships, truck fleets, farms, ranches, independent truck repair shops, and construction, mining, or oil exploration companies. Employers recruiting on campus in recent years include various Caterpillar, New Holland, and Kenworth dealers, as well as mining industry employers. The Career Services office and the Diesel faculty typically receive requests from over twice as many companies seeking UM-Helena Diesel Technology graduates as the College can supply to the industry.
