BECOME INVOLVED!

Preamble to the Constitution of the Associated Students of The University of MontanaHelena College of Technology (ASUM-Helena)

We, the Associated Students of The University of Montana – Helena College of Technology, in order to encourage constructive relationships among the students, the faculty, and the administration; to supplement and complement formal education on the UM-HCT campus; to represent students’ interests, needs and welfare within the college campus; to provide for the expression of student opinions and interests to the community at large on issues affecting student life; and to protect the privileges and rights of students herein stated, do hereby establish and affirm this constitution for the Associated students of The University of Montana – Helena College of Technology.

Basic Structure

Two students from each program at UM-HCT are elected as senators to represent their program and the registered students of the college.  The student body elects a president, vice-president, and business manager to the Executive Branch and to oversee the senate.  Meetings take place weekly or bi-weekly during the academic year.  Student activity fees finance the running of the senate.  A faculty or staff advisor has a voice but not a vote within the senate and provides guidance and support.

The Senate Provides Seed Money to Clubs Wishing to Organize and Financial Support to Existing Clubs

A group wanting ASUM-H recognition must:

a.   Have a faculty advisor.

b.   Have a participating member in the student senate.

c.   Have a financial account with the school to keep balances of money.

d.   Have elected officers.

e.   National affiliation is preferred but not necessary.

f.   Have a Constitution to show structure of a group.  (Constitution Article 7, Section 1)

The Senate encourages the formation of clubs and groups on campus.  For more information, contact a Senator in person or email studentsenate@umhelena.edu.
