A variety of services are available to students with disabilities at UM-Helena. These services include alternative testing, adaptive and assistive equipment, campus and mobility orientation, alternative material production, other services by request (large print, Braille, and audiotape), note taking and scribing, and academic advising. The services offered to each student are determined by the student's needs and documentation.
If materials are needed in an alternative format, the student should request those as soon as possible so that they can be ordered.
In addition, if a student needs an interpreter, that request should be made as early as possible so that the most appropriate services can be put into place for the student.
Mission
Students at UM-Helena will be afforded the same opportunities for physical and programmatic access as students without disabilities.
Services for students with disabilities are provided at UM-Helena under the guidelines of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Access to the College's programs is provided for all qualified students regardless of ability or disability, and discrimination based on disability against any student is specifically prohibited under these laws.
UM-Helena is an open-enrollment institution which requires students wishing to enroll to hold a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED. Students take the COMPASS placement test to determine appropriate math and English scores or supply other accepted test scores or transfer credits. See Admissions for more detailed information.
Students who wish to inquire about disability services should call the Disability Services Director at (406)-444-6897 and request a meeting or an application for disability services.
