First Semester Advising
You Meet with Your First Semester Advisor
- After your application to UM-Helena is complete and you have received a letter from Admissions saying you are ready to meet with a First Semester Advisor; and
- After the school has received placement ACT/SAT/MUSWA scores for English and Math placements, or After you have taken the COMPASS Test for placement purposes

Your First Semester Advisor Can Help You
Your First Semester Advisor Will
- Give you a UM-Helena College Catalog and show you how to use it
- Introduce you to the Course Schedule, both in print and online
- Explain what key resources are available on campus: Financial Aid, Disability Services, Mental Health Counseling, the Learning Center tutors, the library, and Business Office
- Select an appropriate academic advisor for you
- Prepare an advising folder that will go to your academic advisor who will help you choose classes for your second semester and the following semesters through graduation
