Compass Test

The Compass Test is a placement tool that Helena College uses to place students in the appropriate level for math and writing courses.

Do I have to take the Compass test?

If you do not have applicable test scores, you must take the Compass test in order to be placed in the right course level for you skills. The intent is to place you into courses that will help you succeed during your academic career.
If you have taken a SAT/ACT within the past three years, you may not have to take a compass test.

You will need to take the complete Compass test, including Algebra and English, if you plan to enter any program at Helena College and do not have transfer credits in these areas. The test may be waived for non-traditional freshmen and transfer students if they have taken college level math and writing courses previously and achieved a passing grade.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the complete test is $15 ($10 for English, $5 for Math), payable to Helena College in the Cashier’s office. You must bring your receipt with you to be able to take the test.

Where do I take the test?

The Compass Test is administered at Helena College in the Student Support Center, located in Room 139 on the Donaldson Campus.
Call the Student Support Center at 406-447-6939 to schedule the test.
